MagicHats My Blog
My general/personal tumblr. Not a whole lot of specific blogging here

Thematically speaking, the most important thing Terry Pratchett taught me was the concept of militant decency. The idea that you can look at the world and its flaws and its injustices and its cruelties and get deeply, intensely angry, and that you can turn that into energy for doing the right thing and making the world a better place. He taught me that the anger itself is not the part I should be fighting. Nobody in my life ever said that before.

More lessons from Pratchett:

  • Good isn’t always nice (i.e. sometimes appearing nice is a luxury you can’t afford if you want to do the right thing) (this refers to setting bones and fighting evil, not to being pointlessly horrible)
  • Evil can appear very nice indeed (watch out for people who smile while they deny your basic humanity)
  • People can suck, be rude and actively work against their own best interests, but personkind is still something we must protect so they can keep being wonderful in between all the stupid
  • “Person” is always a broader category than you think
  • It’s not about who’s best for the job - it’s about who shows up and does it
  • Be very aware of how you treat those in your power; you will be judged on it
  • Respect women, which explicitly includes trans women (with or without beards and steel-toed boots)
  • Kings: no. Hard-boiled eggs: yes

  • No one - not military leaders, not kings, not patricians, not gods - no one is beyond consequences or above justice
  • Addendum: those who think they are are often the worst of the worst
  • Kids understand more than we think and sometimes the best way to protect innocence is to arm them with knowledge, confidence, and skill
  • How you’re born is intrinsically less important and less relevant than who you make yourself into
  • I can’t put it into a pithy sentence but that bit where Magrat is like “let’s toss [Lily] off the tower” and Nanny answers with “go ahead then” and Magrat hesitates bc it’s easier to do something like that together than to make the decision alone… impactful.
  • Evil begins when we treat people like things.

Honestly?

Fuck cringe culture.

Wear your tail. Wear your ears. Be an animal. I’m a 22 year old man who fell asleep with his realistic wolf plush yesterday because it felt like a wolf pup to me. Embrace your alterhumanity. Time goes on and you only live once in this body. Make the most of it and fuck what others think.

One of my greatest joys right now is living in an university area, where I might get lucky and see a person who seems to go to school and/or live in the apartments nearby.

This tall arse person walking around any random day in cute little skirts and schoolgirl shirts, with a headband with cat ears with little bells, some days with a tail attached to the skirt of the day.

All while built like a brickwall.

But clearly not giving a crap about whatever anyone might think.

It brings me such joy to see someone just being so true to themself and however they wanna present themself every day.

This person has the blood of cringe culture on their hands.

Life’s too short to worry about people being jerks about other people who are just trying to find some joy in life. To quote Miranda Hart in her sitcom Miranda, which is still one of my favourite comfort-viewing shows:

For the last two days, I’ve tried to be a grown-up, but I have no interest in abiding by the adult rulebook. I want to do fun things that make me happy… you might call me a child. Good. For if adults had even the slightest in-the-moment joy of a child, then frankly, the world would be a better place.

And:

I’ll always gallop with gay abandon, and I’ll always find a euphemism in anything, I’ll always sing if someone inadvertently speaks song lyrics, and I’ll always love the word “plunge”. And that is not being a child. It’s just sometimes the world needs to be jollied.

Somewhere along the way, it became uncool (if not actually disgusting) to be openly enthusiastic and joyful about just about anything in life. When did so many people become such joyless prudes? I’ve had enough of it. Bring back joy, wonder, and enthusiasm, and stop worrying about other people being self-righteous asshats just because they think these things are immature or somehow beneath them. Quite frankly, I’m of the opinion that they’re the ones who need to grow up. Something isn’t for you? Fine. You don’t have to love it. But as long as nobody is actually being truly harmed, you don’t have to bully other people into agreeing with you. Just look away and keep your snotty comments to yourself.

me: i don’t want to see jellyfish so i will blacklist the tag #jellyfish

people with no common sense: je11yf1sh, je11¥fi5h, j*llyf*sh, je//ÿf!sh, j3ï||yf¡sh, gel lee fisk

result: cannot account for the sheer amount of possible ways to alter the word jellyfish

conclusion: i have to see jellyfish now.

Once again, tumblr is not tiktok, tag properly.

this heavily extends to tagging crucial things like "flashing," "flickering," and even "strobing"!

please dont tag flashing (or any of the above) as 'fl*shing,' 'fl4sh1ng,' 'flashing /' or 'flashing tw' or any variant of! just tag it as 'flashing'!

By editing crucial tags like above ^ filters will not reliably blacklist gifsets/videos/images that can cause photosensitive individuals serious harm.

you never know who of your followers is epileptic or photosensitive, please do us the kindness of letting us curate our online experiences :,3

“happy endings” this “sad endings” that– you can debate the relative merits of each till your mouth goes dry and it’s still not a meaningful binary. Is the ending coherent and emotionally appropriate for the story? Cool.

Thinking about when I worked at a shitty restaurant + one night it was just me + 3 other women on closing shift, so some guy came in the back and waved a knife around, presumably for money but I’m not actually certain, bc he was met with the bartender holding a much bigger knife, a tiny teenager wielding a cast iron pan, an elderly woman holding up a crockpot of clearly boiling water, and me, turning on the meat slicer with eye contact for maximum effect. He left, but the moral of the story is not girl power or whatever, it’s just. Why the fuck would you threaten a room full of underpaid and sleep-deprived blue-collar workers surrounded by lethal weapons.

Even ignoring the quantity of workers or weaponry, I think there’s something special about specifically

  1. using a knife
  2. to threaten a cook
  3. in a kitchen

Man it really is a shame that as of this date (July 5th, 2023) that Cookie’s Bustle is all but scrapped off the web at large.

There’s only two videos discussing it directly (and that more about the take downs and not directly the game itself), with everything else turning up no results.

I know some people on twitter were thinking that it was for some sort of relaunch, but at this point I really don’t think it’s some sort of modern reboot.

This is really a bummer for game preservation. Also a bummer as a person who just likes weird obscure games.
